The short version
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not sell data to ad networks. What we store falls into three groups: storage that is strictly necessary to sign you in, storage that remembers your preferences, and a pseudonymous identifier used for basic product analytics, which you can turn off in Settings.
Essential storage (cannot be turned off)
Without these, sign-in and security do not work, so they are used on the basis of necessity rather than consent.
- Authentication session (browser local storage, set by our authentication provider) — keeps you signed in and refreshes your session token. Kept: until you sign out or the session expires.
- untangle.lang (first-party cookie) — tells our server which language to render the page in, so the first paint matches your account language. Kept: up to 1 year.
Preference storage
- Appearance settings (browser local storage) — remembers your theme, light/dark/system mode and font so the app does not flash the wrong colours while loading. Kept: until you clear browser storage.
- Interface state (browser local/session storage) — small pieces of UI state such as dismissed prompts, draft text you have not saved yet, and resend cooldowns. Kept: short-lived, or until cleared.
Product analytics and app-install measurement
To understand which parts of Untangle help people, we record basic product events (for example: a reflection was created, a page was opened). Events may include a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser (anon_id), a session identifier, the page path, referrer, platform, device type, language and country-level location. They do not include the content of your reflections.
- untangle.anon_id (browser local storage) — a randomly generated identifier that lets us count product events without using your name or email. Kept: until you turn analytics off or clear browser storage.
- untangle.session_id (browser session storage) — groups events from one visit together. Kept: 30 minutes of inactivity, or until the tab is closed.
- untangle.install_id (browser local storage on the web; app storage (Capacitor Preferences) in the Android app) — a randomly generated installation identifier so an app install and its first open are counted once. Sent with platform, device type, app version, language, acquisition channel and campaign, plus a country code our hosting provider derives from your IP address. It is not an advertising ID and not a device identifier. Kept: until you clear app data / browser storage, or uninstall.
- untangle.analytics_opt_out (browser local storage) — remembers that you turned analytics off, so nothing is sent even before the app has loaded your account settings. Kept: until you turn analytics back on.
These are not strictly necessary, so they are used on the basis of your consent: you can switch them off at any time in Settings → Privacy & data. When analytics is off we stop recording product events and stop reporting app opens, and the analytics identifiers are removed from your browser. Security, error and abuse-prevention logging continues, because it is necessary to operate the service safely.
Email open tracking
Optional emails such as weekly insights may contain a small tracking image that tells us the message was opened. This is used only to check whether our emails are being delivered and read. It is not included when you have turned off analytics, and it is never used in essential account, security or billing emails.
No advertising trackers
Untangle contains no advertising pixels, no social-media tracking scripts and no third-party ad cookies.
Your controls

- Turn off optional/marketing emails separately from essential account emails in Settings → Notifications.
